The temple Kiyomizu-dera  dates back to 798, but the present buildings were constructed in 1633. The temple takes its name from the waterfall within the complex, which runs off the nearby hills - kiyoi mizu means pure water. The temple complex also contains shrine - Jishu Jinja dedicated to the god of love. This is one of the best known sights in the town.
